City of St.Gallen

The city of St.Gallen is the metropolis of Eastern Switzerland. Especially worth seeing is the Stiftsbezirk or Convent area, which was included in the 1983 UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. Make sure you visit the Cathedral and library there. The programmes of the Tonhalle (Concert Hall) and the Stadttheater offer a variety of entertainment throughout the year. Even in rainy weather a visit to St Gallen is worthwhile, not only for the great shopping, but also the swimming pools such as the adventure pool, 'Säntispark' in the west of the city with its sauna and steam bath, a skating rink, the animal park Peter and Paul and various other entertainment opportunities.

Markthalle Altenrhein – An architectural project by Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Gilded onion-shaped towers, glowing colours, sweeping lines, mis-matched windows, uneven floors, colourful ceramic columns, shady covered walks and grassy roofs are the trademarks of the architecture of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Just like many other well-known buildings in Europe and Japan, the 'Markthalle' in Altenrhein (near Rorschach) is an impressive example of the unusual architectural concepts of this internationally renowned artist. This is the only example of his buildings in Switzerland!

The Markthalle offers events, art shops, a gallery, a restaurant, as well as an exhibition space with changing exhibitions. The hall can be rented for various occasions.

Abenteuerland Walter Zoo, Gossau St.Gallen

This Zoo, a favourite destination for families, is to be found above Gossau to the west of St Gallen. It houses 500 animals of 130 species in attractive parkland and enclosures. Amongst its other attractions are barbecues, children's play areas, a petting zoo and restaurant as well as daily pony and camel rides. During the high season there is entertainment in the show tent, which lasts an hour and is included in the entrance fee.

Maestrani – the Swiss Chocolate factory

The most modern chocolate factory in Switzerland, Maestrani has been in the chocolate business for over 150 years. They are a leading member of the Swiss fine chocolate industry and manufacture the brands Munz and Minor. This company of 180 employees is in Flawil (take the motorway St Gallen – Zürich and exit at Uzwil in the direction of Wattwil). Tours of the factory with sampling can be arranged Monday-Friday during shop opening times. For a group or guided tour you must book in advance.
