The Bodensee and Säntis simply belong together. The magnificent mountain dominates the panorama throughout the region. From its imposing summit you have an unobstructed view of six countries. Säntis is a fabulous experience in every season and the cable car operates all year round. The Panorama Restaurant is a lovely place to eat and offers typical specialities from the Appenzell area.

The 'Witzwanderweg' (The Joke Footpath)

Laughing and walking, now that's healthy!
A pleasant two and a half hour walk with lovely views of the Appenzell area and of the Bodensee takes you from Heiden to Walzenhausen (it's also possible to use the Post-bus).

You can do this easy roundtrip in a variety of ways with children. Travel from Rorschach or Rorschach-Hafen to Heiden by rack railway, walk along the Witzwanderweg as far as Walzenhausen, take the mountain railway along the steep part to Rheineck. From Rheineck take a boat along the old Rhine to Rorschach. The length of time for this trip, including the walking is around 6 hours but it can be shortened to 4 hours if you use the Post-bus.
