Museum of History in Arbon Castle

Historisches Museum Schloss Arbon

This is the largest private museum in Thurgau. The permanent displays, constructed using the most up to date developments, take you through Arbon's exciting 5500 years of history in an interesting and entertaining way. The early Stone Age, Bronze Age, Roman times, the Middle Ages, the linen trade of the 18th century and the industrialisation of the 19th and 20th centuries are vividly described through the exhibitions, pictures, documents and evocative short texts, some of which are originals.

Other parts of the Museum have exhibits which show Church history, the style of living in the Biedermeier period, Arbon's early water system, the history of the castle, the firearms produced in Arbon, the local Police force, an exclusive collection of regional weaponry, the freezing over of The Bodensee and the flooding of 1999.

Finally, for an incomparable view, we recommend that you climb the castle tower. In the renovated hall on the ground floor, dating from the Middle Ages, there are regularly changing special exhibitions about local history.
