Fruit Tree Collection Roggwil
Obstsortensammlung Roggwil
This fruit tree collection is quite unique. On 4 hectares of land, the society that runs the collection has planted over 320 standard fruit trees with the aim of preserving old types of apples, pears, cherries and plums and preventing their extinction.
Nonetheless, over the last 40 years 75% of the well known fruit varieties of this region have been lost, leaving us today with only one in four of the quality fruit varieties that were so typical of region known as 'Mostindien'. Approximately 100 active members from far and wide, with or without knowledge of caring for fruit trees, meet here regularly on Saturdays to cultivate and to maintain the trees under expert guidance and also to harvest the fruit.
The fruit tree collection is free to visit but group guided tours can be arranged with Heinz Daepp (President) Tel. 071 455 11 53 or Urs Heinzelmann, Tel 071 455 15 68. Access is from the main road Roggwil-Neukirch or from Feilen/Stachen (watch out for the signpost). Adjacent to the fruit tree collection is the Gletscher-Findlings garden (Glacial Rock Garden), which has a barbecue and picnic area and is always freely accessible.
The society is always happy to receive new rare specimens. If you have such an example growing in your garden or orchard please do not hesitate to get in touch with the society president.
New members to the society are always welcome.
