Arbon – The charming resort on the lake

A wander through the historic old town with its many carefully restored houses recalls Arbon’s eventful past as an important trading and manufacturing town down through the centuries. Arbon‘s lake shore, which is over three kilometres long, has one of the oldest bathing beaches in Switzerland, a modern swimming pool, parks, walking paths through a nature reserve, places to barbecue, playgrounds and the well-known harbour: an array of possibilities for young and old alike. The many speciality shops in the old town, as well as the large chain stores offer lots of shopping opportunities. There are hotels of every standard and other accommodation to choose from, ranging from private rooms, through barns, tepees, camping grounds and numerous holiday homes to rent. Culinary choice abounds with the many restaurants and cafés serving international menus as well as typical Swiss dishes and local specialities. The finest Swiss chocolate delicacies are still traditionally made by two of Arbon’s confectioners. A variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and other produce are available straight from the farm.

A full calendar of events makes Arbon a lively place to visit any time of the year. Thanks to the many societies and sport clubs and the leisure facilities that are open to the public, there are endless activities to fill your spare time. Nestled in a charming landscape with green meadows, fruit trees, colourful fields and forests on one side and the atmospheric lake on the other, Arbon offers a great quality of life. A well-developed infrastructure and good transport connections to the rest of Switzerland and to other countries in Europe, make this town of 13,000 inhabitants a popular place to live. It’s also a favourite starting point from which to visit nearby Appenzell and for bicycle tours around the lake or through the lush countryside of the Kanton of Thurgau.
